If done correctly – Converting a physical machine to virtual in VMWare is actually pretty easy.
Microsploit has converted hundreds of physical to virtual machines for our customer. We always recommend a fresh start but lets be honest its often pretty difficult to migrate legacy applications to new operating systems. We are often left with just one option. Convert.
The assessment » This is key. You have to understand how the physical machine is configured and what applications are used.
Before we start any migration we have to run an assessment. Here are a couple of items that we look for.
- Is the machine windows or Linux.
- is the operating systems vendor supported.
- How much space is currently utilized.
- what applications and services are used.
- Is there a database running.
- Is the physical machine a hyper-visor.
- Does the converted virtual require special vlans or networks.
Test Run » We request a test run.
The reason we request a test run is that it will allow us to determine accurately how much downtime a customer will have. Most of the problems will be identified during this trial run and would eliminate downtime.
Migration » We are ready to begin.
Depending on what we covered above. We proceed to scheduling a maintenance window with the customer. Once the migration is complete. We configure the networking and remove any legacy devices that have been picked up from the physical device. We make sure the virtual hardware and VMWare tools and running and updated to the latest version. Before shutting down the physical machine we ask the customer to test and verify that everything is working as expected. This is assuming that the customer will receive a new IP otherwise we would shutdown the physical machine to use its IP address.
Tools » Here are the tools that we use.
We use for converting (VMWare Converter) it is a proven solution and its free if you already have a partnership with VMWare.
Another tools that is handy is rvtools. We use this tool to run assessments on VMWare solutions.
